Exam Practice: Tenses and Text Context

How it works

In this topic area, we practice the use and distinction of English tenses (e.g. ‹present simple›, ‹present perfect›, ‹past simple›, ‹future with will›) in the context of longer texts. It is important that the tense matches the respective situation and the text context. For example, ‹present simple› describes regular actions or facts (‹She plays tennis every Saturday.›), while ‹present perfect› creates a connection between the past and the present (‹She has played tennis since she was five.›). Choosing the correct tense helps make the sequence of events and the meaning in the text clear.

Note
Choose the tense that fits the meaning in the sentence and the context of the text. Pay attention to signal words and to whether the action is completed, happens regularly, or still has an effect on the present.

An example

Choose the correct tense: ‹Last year, I ____ (to visit) London for the first time.›

The correct form is ‹visited›, because it is a completed action in the past: ‹Last year, I visited London for the first time.›
