Exam practice: word meanings and paraphrases
How it works
In this topic area, you practice explaining English words and sentences in other words (paraphrases) or recognizing their meaning in context. Often it helps to find synonyms, paraphrases, or examples. For example, ‹to purchase› means the same as ‹to buy›. Paraphrases help you understand texts better and work out unfamiliar words. It is important to pay attention to the context: ‹bright› can, for example, mean ‹intelligent› or ‹shiny›, depending on the context. You learn to assign meanings confidently and select suitable paraphrases.
Pay attention to the context of an English word or sentence in order to recognize the correct meaning or paraphrase. Choose the option that best conveys the meaning.
An example
