Exam practice: detail information and text evidence

How it works

In this exercise, the aim is to recognize and correctly assign detail information and textual evidence in English reading texts. Detail questions test whether you can filter specific information from a text. A text citation is a specific passage or a sentence that supports a statement. Example: In the sentence ‹Tom moved to London in 2018.›, the information about the move and the year is a detail that serves as evidence for a corresponding question. It is important to pay attention to the exact wording in the text to avoid confusion.

Note
To find detail information correctly, read the question carefully and look in the text for the exact information or the matching evidence. Compare the answer choices with the text and choose the option that is fully and clearly supported by a passage.

An example

‹Read the passage: On Saturday, Maya arrived at the community centre an hour before the school art fair started. She checked the list of student paintings, arranged labels under each picture, and borrowed extra tape from the office when one poster kept falling down. While other volunteers were still carrying tables into the hall, Maya was already testing the lights above the display area. When the first visitors entered, everything in her section was ready. Which sentence from the passage best proves that Maya prepared carefully for the event?›

The correct answer would be the text passage ‹She checked the list of student paintings, arranged labels under each picture, and borrowed extra tape from the office when one poster kept falling down.›, because it specifically shows that Maya carefully carried out several preparatory steps.
