Exam practice: Main ideas in English texts and passages
How it works
In 10 grade, it is important to be able to reliably identify the main ideas of English texts and text passages. The main idea (‹main idea›) describes what the entire text or passage is mainly about. It often appears at the beginning or end of a paragraph, but sometimes it must be inferred from several pieces of information. Typical signal words include, for example: ‹mainly›, ‹focuses on›, ‹the author argues that›. To find the main idea, you should understand the text as a whole and not just focus on details. Example: In a text about healthy eating, the main idea could be: ‹Eating vegetables is essential for a healthy lifestyle.› Even if details about different types of vegetables are mentioned, this remains the central point.
The main idea of an English text or passage summarizes the central theme or the most important message. Read the text carefully and consider which statement covers all important information without focusing on unimportant details.
An example
Read the passage: ‹For history week, a group of students planned to make posters about the town's past. After interviewing grandparents and shop owners, however, they changed their idea and created a short podcast series instead. The recordings mixed dates with personal memories about factory work, migration, and life before the new bridge was built. More classes listened than expected, and many students said the stories helped them understand why local history still matters today. The project showed that history became more meaningful when people connected facts with real voices.› Which statement best reflects the main idea? A) ‹The students were disappointed because nobody listened to their podcast.› B) ‹Using personal stories helped students make local history more meaningful.› C) ‹The main purpose of the project was to practise poster design.› D) ‹The interviews proved that dates are more important than memories.›
