Conveying meaning appropriately on the basis of your own short texts (English)
How it works
Conveying meaning appropriately means transferring the meaning of a text or a statement into the target language without translating word for word. It is important to grasp the context, the intention and the most important information and reproduce them appropriately. For example, ‹I’m afraid I can’t come to your party› can be rendered appropriately as ‘Unfortunately, I can’t come to your party.’ The aim is to capture the meaning and the tone, not to translate literally. Typical mistakes are overlooking nuances or transferring idioms without adapting them to the target language.
When transferring an English short text into German appropriately (or vice versa), the key information, intention and tone are taken into account. Literal translations are often not appropriate; instead, an equivalent rendering in meaning is required.
