Similarity and intercept theorems
How it works
Similar figures have equal corresponding angles and proportional side lengths. The scale factor acts linearly on lengths, quadratically on areas, and cubically on volumes.
Note
Length: k; area: k²; volume: k³.
Length: k; area: k²; volume: k³.
An example
A figure is enlarged by a factor of 2. One side was 5 cm long. How long is it afterwards? Give the result in cm.
Lengths are multiplied by k: 5·2. Result: 10 cm.
