CLASS 5 · LEARNING KNOWLEDGE
Alphabet, spelling, and sound-letter correspondence in English (Grade 5)
How it works
The English alphabet consists of 26 letters. Many letters are pronounced differently in English than in German. It is especially important to recognize and spell the letters correctly, since this is often needed for names, email addresses, or in class. For example, ‹A› is pronounced in English as ‹/eɪ/›, ‹J› as ‹/dʒeɪ/› and ‹Y› as ‹/waɪ/›. When spelling, you say the letter names, not the sounds in the word. There are also letter combinations that together produce a different sound, for example ‹th› as in ‹this› or ‹sh› as in ‹ship›.
Note
When spelling in English, the letter names are used. The pronunciation of the letters may differ from German. Words are written as is customary in English, not necessarily as they are pronounced.
