Radiation, spectra and measurement methods – basic principles
How it works
Astronomical objects emit electromagnetic radiation, which is measured with telescopes and detectors. The light contains information about temperature, chemical composition and motion of the objects. Spectra show characteristic lines that indicate certain elements or molecules. Redshift provides information about the motion of objects in the universe. Different measurement methods (e.g. photometry, spectroscopy) allow different analyses. The atmosphere influences the observation of certain types of radiation.
Note
Astronomical radiation can be studied by analysing spectra and intensities for properties and motions of celestial bodies. Different types of radiation and measurement methods provide different information, whose interpretation requires physical laws.

An example
What does an absorption line in the solar spectrum indicate?
An absorption line in the solar spectrum indicates that a certain element in the sunlight has absorbed certain wavelengths. This allows conclusions to be drawn about the chemical composition of the solar atmosphere.
