Structure and development of galaxies – basic principles

How it works

Galaxies are huge accumulations of stars, gas, dust and dark matter held together by gravity. There are various types of galaxies such as spiral galaxies, elliptical galaxies and irregular galaxies, which differ in form, structure and development. Galaxies can change their structure through collisions and interactions. The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy. The development of galaxies is influenced by processes such as star formation, supernovae and mergers. Galaxy clusters are larger structures that contain many galaxies.

Note
Galaxies are distinguished according to form, composition and development; their structure and development are shaped by gravity, star formation and interactions.

An example

Which property is typical of a spiral galaxy?

Typical of a spiral galaxy are pronounced spiral arms, in which many young stars and gas can be found.
