Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram: Basic Principles

How it works

The Hertzsprung-Russell diagram (HRD) is a scatter plot that arranges stars according to their luminosity (y-axis, usually in solar luminosities) and their surface temperature (x-axis, usually in Kelvin, decreasing to the right). It shows typical groups of stars such as the main sequence, giants, supergiants, and white dwarfs. The position of a star in the HRD depends on its mass, its stage of evolution, and its temperature. The HRD is a central tool for studying stellar evolution.

Note
In the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, stars are arranged according to luminosity and surface temperature; typical types of stars occupy characteristic positions.

An example

Where are main-sequence stars located in the HRD?

Main-sequence stars lie as a diagonal band from the upper left (hot and luminous) to the lower right (cool and faint). They fuse hydrogen into helium.
