Energy generation of the Sun – basic principles

How it works

The Sun gains its energy through nuclear fusion in the solar interior. In the process, hydrogen nuclei fuse into helium, with a small part of the mass being converted into energy. This process in the Sun takes place mainly via the proton-proton chain. The energy released makes the Sun's luminosity possible. The Sun is a main-sequence star and uses hydrogen as its most important fuel. Energy production is strongest in the core. From there, the energy is transported outward by radiation and convection. The Sun remains stable over a long time because, in hydrostatic equilibrium, the outward-directed pressure of the hot plasma counteracts the inward pull of gravity.

Note
The Sun gains energy through nuclear fusion, in which hydrogen nuclei fuse into helium and mass is converted into energy (E=mc²). This process takes place in the solar core and determines the Sun's luminosity.
