Safe observation and discovering space travel – basics

How it works

When observing the sky safely, it is important never to look directly at the Sun, especially not with optical devices such as binoculars or telescopes without special protective filters. Space travel includes the exploration of outer space by rockets, satellites and space probes. Astronauts need special equipment to survive in space, because there is no oxygen there and extreme temperatures prevail. The International Space Station (ISS) is an example of a crewed space station on which experiments are carried out in space. Satellites orbit the Earth and are used, among other things, for weather observation, navigation and communication.

Note
When observing the sky and in space travel, the following applies: the Sun must never be observed without suitable protection; space travel requires special technology and protective measures, because lifeless conditions prevail in outer space.

An example

Why must one never observe the Sun through a normal pair of binoculars?

A normal pair of binoculars bundles the sunlight strongly and can cause serious eye damage. Only special solar filters provide sufficient protection.
