Pythagorean theorem
How it works
In a right-angled triangle, the hypotenuse is the side opposite the right angle. The sum of the squares of the legs equals the square of the hypotenuse.
Note
a²+b²=c²; c=√(a²+b²).
a²+b²=c²; c=√(a²+b²).
An example
A right-angled triangle has legs of 64 cm and 120 cm. How long is the hypotenuse? Give the result in cm.
c=√(64²+120²)=√18496=136. Result: 136 cm.
