The Moon as a Companion – Fundamentals
How it works
The Moon is the Earth's only natural satellite. It orbits the Earth about once a month and thereby shows different lunar phases. The Moon's gravity influences the Earth, for example through the formation of tides. The Moon reflects the light of the Sun and therefore shines in the night sky. The surface of the Moon is shaped by craters and plains. The Moon is much smaller than the Earth and has practically no atmosphere.

An example
What do you call the form of the Moon when it appears fully illuminated as seen from the Earth?
That is the full moon. Explanation: When the Moon appears completely illuminated as seen from the Earth, it is called a full moon because the entire visible side of the Moon is illuminated by the Sun.
