CLASS 5 · LEARNING KNOWLEDGE
Day and Night – Basic Principles
How it works
Day and night arise from the Earth's rotation about its axis. As the Earth rotates, about half of the Earth is always illuminated by the Sun (day), while the other half faces away from the Sun (night). The Earth rotates once around itself in about 24 hours. For observers in Germany, the Sun appears to rise roughly in the east and set roughly in the west over the course of the day; the exact direction shifts somewhat over the course of the year. The length of day and night can change over the course of the year, especially at higher latitudes.
Note
Day and night arise because the Earth rotates about its own axis and thus different areas of the Earth's surface are illuminated by the Sun.

An example
Why is there day and night on Earth?
Because the Earth rotates about its own axis, only the part of the Earth facing the Sun is illuminated (day), while the part turned away lies in shadow (night).
