Source work, quoting and avoiding plagiarism – basic principles
How it works
Source work includes the correct use, quoting and documenting of other people's ideas, texts, images or data. Verbatim quotations must be clearly marked as such and provided with an exact source reference. Plagiarism arises when content from others is taken over without appropriate marking. Depending on the requirements, there are different citation methods that must be followed consistently. Paraphrases, too, require a source reference. The aim is to respect intellectual property and ensure that one's own work can be traced.
Other people's ideas, formulations, images or data must always be correctly identified as a quotation or paraphrase with a complete source reference in order to avoid plagiarism.
