Grammar and style revision – basic principles

How it works

Grammar and style revision includes the correct application of grammatical rules (e.g. tenses, sentence structure, agreement), the recognition and correction of errors, as well as the stylistic improvement of texts. This includes avoiding repetition, replacing filler words, adapting to the text type, and creating clarity and precision. It is important that grammatical correctness and appropriate style together lead to a comprehensible and appealing text.

Note
In grammar and style revision, errors in grammar, punctuation, and expression are identified and corrected, with attention to linguistic accuracy, clarity, and an appropriate style.

An example

Which of the following sentences is grammatically correct and stylistically the clearest? ‹Der Schüler, der gestern zu spät gekommen ist, hat sich entschuldigt.› / ‹Der Schüler der gestern zu spät gekommen ist hat sich entschuldigt.› / ‹Der Schüler, der gestern zu spät gekommen ist hat sich entschuldigt.› / ‹Der Schüler der gestern zu spät gekommen ist, hat sich entschuldigt.›

Only the first sentence is correct because the commas in the relative clause are placed correctly and the sentence is clear and complete.
