CLASS 10 · LEARNING KNOWLEDGE
Narrative perspective, time structuring and composition – basic principles
How it works
The narrative perspective determines from which point of view a story is told (first-person narrator, omniscient narrator, limited third-person narrator). Time structuring includes techniques such as summary, scene, and stretch. The composition of a text describes the division into introduction, main part and conclusion as well as possible flashbacks or foreshadowing. These elements influence how readers receive information and experience the plot.
Note
The narrative perspective determines who is telling and how much they know; time structuring controls the pace of the narration; the composition arranges the plot and structures the text.

An example
Which narrative perspective is present in the sentence ‹Ich konnte nicht glauben, was ich sah.›?
This is a first-person narrator, since the figure uses ‹Ich› and the events are described from their perspective.
