Linguistic devices and their text function – basic principles
How it works
Linguistic devices are deliberate linguistic design tools such as metaphors, comparisons, anaphoras, alliterations or rhetorical questions. They are used to make texts more lively, vivid or convincing. Each device fulfills a specific function in the text, e.g. reinforcement of statements, emphasis of feelings or structuring. Recognizing and interpreting these devices is important for text comprehension and analysis.
Note
Linguistic devices are recognized by their form and effect. Their function results from the context: they can emphasize, illustrate, arouse feelings or strengthen arguments.
