Comparison of factual texts – basic principles

How it works

When comparing factual texts, at least two texts on a topic are examined with regard to content, structure, language and intention. Similarities and differences are identified. Important criteria are the development of the topic, argumentation structure, linguistic devices, target group and the authors' intention. The comparison is carried out objectively and statements are supported with text evidence. A structured layout with introduction, main part and conclusion is important. Linguistic differences can also be relevant, for example between a neutral formulation such as ‹Die Maßnahme wird eingeführt.› and an evaluative formulation such as ‹Die unsinnige Maßnahme wird eingeführt.›

Note
When comparing factual texts, the texts are systematically contrasted according to defined criteria such as content, argumentation, language and intention. Statements must be supported with suitable text evidence, for example with formulations such as ‹zunächst›, ‹außerdem› or evaluative words such as ‹problematisch›.

An example

Which similarity in structure do the text excerpts ‹Zuerst werden die Ursachen des Verkehrslärms erklärt. Danach folgen Lösungsvorschläge.› and ‹Am Anfang beschreibt der Text das Problem. Anschließend nennt er konkrete Maßnahmen.› show?

Both excerpts are structured in a similar way: First the problem is introduced, then further explanations or solutions follow. This is shown by the signals ‹Zuerst ... Danach ...› and ‹Am Anfang ... Anschließend ...›.
