Journalistic text types and media criticism – basic principles

How it works

Journalistic text types are different forms of texts in newspapers, magazines and online media, e.g. ‹Nachricht›, ‹Bericht›, ‹Kommentar›, ‹Reportage› and ‹Interview›. Each text type has typical features: The ‹Nachricht› is factual and often answers the W-questions ‹Wer?›, ‹Was?›, ‹Wann?›, ‹Wo?›, ‹Wie?› and ‹Warum?›; the ‹Kommentar› contains opinions. Media criticism means critically questioning media content, e.g. with regard to objectivity, manipulation or sources. Media can influence information by emphasizing or omitting certain aspects. Media literacy includes recognizing intentions, forms of presentation and possible errors in media.

Note
Journalistic text types such as ‹Nachricht›, ‹Bericht›, ‹Kommentar›, ‹Reportage› and ‹Interview› differ in structure, purpose and linguistic features; media criticism checks content for objectivity, manipulation and credibility.

An example
