Linear and dialectical essay writing – basic principles
How it works
Linear essay writing develops arguments one after another for a question, usually in one direction. Dialectical essay writing places opposing arguments side by side and weighs them against each other. Both forms follow a clear structure: introduction (topic, lead-in, question), main part (arguments, examples, evidence), conclusion (summary, personal position). Important are factual language, logical structure, and comprehensible chains of argument. A simple example of a dialectical structure is: ‹Schuluniformen fördern das Gemeinschaftsgefühl. Allerdings schränken sie die Individualität ein.›
In a linear essay, arguments for one side are presented one after another. In a dialectical essay, pro and contra arguments are contrasted and weighed against each other, for example in a formulation such as: ‹Schülerjobs bringen Erfahrung, können aber auch Stress verursachen.›
