Sentence structure variants and text coherence – basics and principles

How it works

Sentence structure variants are different ways of forming and arranging sentences. They influence the comprehensibility, style and effect of a text. Text coherence describes how well sentences and sections are logically and linguistically connected with one another. Cohesive devices such as conjunctions, pronouns and reprises ensure cohesion. The aim is to create a smooth, comprehensible text through suitable sentence structures and links.

Note
Sentence structure variants and cohesive devices are used specifically to connect texts logically, avoid repetitions and increase comprehensibility.

An example

What function does the word ‹deshalb› fulfill in the sentence: ‹Es regnete stark, deshalb blieben wir zu Hause.›?

‹Deshalb› is a connector that establishes a causal relationship between two sentences. It indicates that the heavy rain is the reason for staying at home.
