Summary and text structure – basic principles
How it works
A summary reproduces the essential content of a text briefly, objectively, and in your own words. It includes an introduction (title, author, genre, topic), a main part (central plot points, important characters, place/time), and a conclusion (if applicable, outcome or result). Direct speech is reported indirectly. The summary is written in the present tense, even if the original text is written in another tense. Evaluations, interpretations, and unimportant details are avoided.
Note
A summary presents the core of a text objectively, briefly, and in your own words in the present tense and follows the structure introduction – main part – conclusion.

An example
Which statement describes a correct introduction for a summary of ‹Die Welle› by Morton Rhue?
The correct introduction names the author, title, genre, and topic, e.g.: ‹Der Roman „Die Welle“ von Morton Rhue handelt von einem Schulprojekt, das außer Kontrolle gerät.› This is objective, brief, and contains all necessary information.
