Reading strategies and summaries – basic principles
How it works
Reading strategies help to understand texts in a targeted way and filter out important information. These include skimming, careful reading, marking important text passages, and formulating questions about the text. A summary gives the most important content of a text in your own words, without unimportant details or direct quotations. It is factual, brief, and guided by the W-questions (‹Wer? Was? Wann? Wo? Warum? Wie?›).
Note
When summarizing a text, the most important information is presented in your own words, briefly and factually, without judgments or unimportant details. Reading strategies such as skimming, marking, and asking questions support text comprehension.
