Understanding stories and fairy tales – basic principles
How it works
Stories and fairy tales are narrative texts. Fairy tales are fictional texts and often have a clear structure with ‹Einleitung›, ‹Hauptteil› and ‹Schluss›. They contain typical features such as fantastic elements, clear contrasts like ‹gut› and ‹böse›, simple characters and often a moral. A typical fairy-tale opening is ‹Es war einmal ...›. Stories usually describe an event or experience, often from the perspective of a character; they can be invented or report on experiences. When reading, it is important to recognise and distinguish structure, characters, plot and typical features.
To understand stories and fairy tales, pay attention to structure, typical features, characters, plot and the message of the text. Clues can, for example, be an opening like ‹Es war einmal ...› or typical repetitions such as ‹drei Wünsche›.
