Spelling strategies and word families – basic principles
How it works
Spelling strategies help you spell words correctly by using rules, word parts, and word families. Word families consist of words with the same root, which often have similar meanings, for example ‹fahr-› in ‹fahren, Fahrer, Abfahrt›. Strategies such as adding endings, deriving, syllabifying, or looking words up in a dictionary help identify the correct spelling. Recognizing prefixes and suffixes also helps avoid mistakes. Capitalization, double consonants, and sound-letter correspondences are important areas of spelling.

To spell words correctly, use spelling strategies such as adding endings, deriving, syllabifying, looking things up, and recognizing word families, for example ‹Hund – Hunde› or ‹fahren – Fahrer›.

An example
Which word does NOT belong to the word family of ‹spiel-›?
‹Spieler›, ‹Spielzeug› and ‹spielen› belong to the word family of ‹spiel-›, but ‹Spiegel› does not, because the root is different.
