Nouns, articles and capitalization
How it works
Nouns name things, living beings, places or concepts. In German, nouns are written with a capital letter, for example ‹Hund›, ‹Schule› or ‹Freude›. For a noun, you learn the basic article in the singular together with it, for example ‹der Hund›, ‹die Blume› or ‹das Auto›. This is how you recognize the gender of a noun.
Note
Always write nouns with a capital letter. Learn the basic article with each noun, for example ‹der Tisch›, ‹die Blume› and ‹das Auto›.

An example
Which sentence is written correctly: ‹Die katze schläft auf dem Sofa.› or ‹Die Katze schläft auf dem Sofa.›?
‹Die Katze schläft auf dem Sofa.› is correct because ‹Katze› is a noun and is therefore written with a capital letter. The basic article for ‹Katze› is ‹die›.
