World-political upheavals after 1989 – basic principles
How it works
After 1989, the world political structures changed fundamentally. The Cold War ended, the Eastern Bloc collapsed, and many states in Central and Eastern Europe became democratic. German reunification, the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the emergence of new states, and the expansion of international organizations such as the EU and NATO shaped this period. At the same time, new conflicts and challenges arose, for example in the Balkans or the Middle East. Globalization gained in importance, and international cooperation became more important.
World-political upheavals after 1989 can be recognized by political, social, and economic changes that include the end of the East-West conflict, the emergence of new states, democratization processes, and new international relations.
