Federal Republic of Germany: democracy and social change – basic principles
How it works
The Federal Republic of Germany was founded in 1949 as a parliamentary democracy. The Basic Law guarantees fundamental rights, separation of powers and the rule of law. The Federal Republic developed into a pluralistic society with a social market economy. Democratic institutions such as the Bundestag, Bundesrat and Federal Constitutional Court ensure co-determination and oversight. Social change is evident, for example, in the expansion of education, women's rights, migration and youth culture. Political participation takes place through elections, parties and citizens' initiatives. The Federal Republic is federally organized, with responsibilities for the federation and the states.
The democracy of the Federal Republic is based on fundamental rights, separation of powers, the rule of law, political participation and federalism. Social change is shown in changes in values, rights and ways of life.
