Founding of the Federal Republic and the GDR – basic principles
How it works
After the Second World War, Germany was divided into four occupation zones. 1949 the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) emerged from the western zones and the German Democratic Republic (GDR) from the Soviet zone. The FRG oriented itself toward Western, democratic principles, while the GDR was a socialist state under Soviet influence. The founding of both states was closely connected with the beginning of the Cold War and led to a lasting division of Germany until 1990.
