Crisis of the Weimar Republic – Fundamental Principles
How it works
The Weimar Republic (1919–1933) was the first parliamentary democracy in Germany. From the very beginning, it was confronted with a wide range of crises: economic instability (e.g. hyperinflation 1923, the Great Depression from 1929), political radicalization (Communists and National Socialists), coup attempts (Kapp Putsch, Hitler-Ludendorff Putsch) and social tensions. Many citizens had little trust in the new democracy. The crises weakened the republic and prepared the ground for the National Socialist seizure of power.
The crises of the Weimar Republic can be divided into economic, political and social problems. The causes, course and consequences of these crises must be assessed on the basis of sources and facts.
