End of the war and revolution 1918 – Basic principles

How it works

The end of the war 1918 in Germany was marked by the military collapse in the First World War, social unrest, hunger and political instability. The November Revolution led to the abdication of Kaiser Wilhelm II and the proclamation of the republic. Workers’ and soldiers’ councils emerged, and various political groups competed for power. The armistice of Compiègne on 11. November 1918 ended the fighting. The events paved the way for the Weimar Republic.

Note
The end of the war 1918 in Germany led, through military defeat, domestic unrest and revolution, to the abdication of the Kaiser and the proclamation of the republic.

An example

Which event politically marked the end of the monarchy in Germany in November 1918?

On 9. November 1918, the abdication of Kaiser Wilhelm II was announced; on the same day, the republic was proclaimed. This meant that the monarchy had politically ended and the way to the republic was open. Formally, Wilhelm II renounced the throne in writing only later.
