Imperialism and colonial rule – basic principles
How it works
Imperialism refers to the striving of powerful states in the 19. and early 20. century to expand their political, economic, and military influence over other territories. Colonial rule means the political, economic, and cultural control over foreign territories and their population. European powers such as Great Britain, France, and the German Empire dominated large parts of Africa and Asia. Motives included raw materials, markets, strategic interests, the desire for power, and the idea of a supposed “civilizing mission”. Colonial rule often led to exploitation, oppression, and long-term consequences for the regions affected. Resistance and conflicts were widespread. After the Second World War, the colonial empires were gradually dismantled as part of decolonization.
Imperialism means the expansion of a state’s power and influence over other territories, often through colonial rule; economic, political, and ideological motives work together in the process.
