Terms and variables
How it works
A variable stands for a number. Like terms can be combined. Parentheses are expanded using the distributive law; when substituting, negative values are safely enclosed in parentheses.
Note
a·x+b·x=(a+b)·x; a(x+b)=ax+ab.
a·x+b·x=(a+b)·x; a(x+b)=ax+ab.
An example
Calculate the term 8x + 2x for x=-3. Give only the requested number.
Combine: (8+2)x=10x. Then substitute x=-3. Result: -30.
