Renaissance and Humanism – Basic Principles
How it works
The Renaissance (ca. 14.–16. century) was a cultural movement that began in Italy and spread to many parts of Europe. It was characterized by the new engagement with antiquity, by changes in art and science, and by a changed view of humanity. Humanism was above all an educational movement: scholars dealt intensively with ancient languages and texts and emphasized the importance of education, reason, and responsible action. Important figures of this period were, for example, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Erasmus of Rotterdam. The invention of printing promoted the spread of texts and new ideas. Renaissance and Humanism had a lasting influence on art, science, politics, and society.
Renaissance and Humanism stand for the new engagement with antiquity, the high value placed on education and reason, and the idea that people can develop their abilities and act responsibly.
