Monasteries, towns and trade in the Middle Ages – basic principles
How it works
In the Middle Ages, monasteries played an important role as religious, cultural and economic centres. Towns often developed along trade routes or around castles and offered markets, artisans and citizens new opportunities. Trade linked regions, promoted prosperity and led to the emergence of trade networks. Guilds regulated craftsmanship, and town rights gave citizens special freedoms. Monasteries preserved knowledge, practised agriculture and supported those in need. Medieval society was shaped by estates, rights and duties.
Monasteries, towns and trade in the Middle Ages were closely connected: monasteries as centres of knowledge and economy, towns as places of trade and craft, and trade as a motor of development and exchange.
