The Frankish Empire and Charlemagne – Basic Principles
How it works
The Frankish Empire was an important early medieval empire in Europe that expanded under the Merovingians and later the Carolingians. Charlemagne (reigned 768–814) was one of the best-known rulers of the Frankish Empire. He led numerous wars, promoted education and Christianity, and was crowned emperor in 800. The empire encompassed large parts of Western Europe and was a precursor of later European states. Administration was supported by counts and margraves. The Carolingian Renaissance brought cultural and educational renewal.
