Christianity and Late Antiquity – Basic Principles

How it works

In Late Antiquity (c. 3.–6. century AD), Christianity gained greatly in importance in the Roman Empire. In 313 AD, Emperor Constantine and Licinius agreed in Milan to tolerate Christianity. In 380 AD, Christianity was elevated to the state religion under Emperor Theodosius I. Christian ideas influenced society, law, and culture. Late Antiquity is also marked by the end of the Western Roman Empire in the year 476 AD and by the emergence of new realms. Churches and bishops gained importance, while pagan cults gradually declined.

Note
The development of Christianity in Late Antiquity includes its toleration in the Roman Empire, its further spread, its growing influence on state and society, as well as the transition from the ancient world to new forms of rule.

An example

Which event contributed significantly to making it easier for Christianity to spread in the Roman Empire?

The Agreement of Milan from the year 313 AD allowed the practice of Christianity in the Roman Empire. As a result, the religion could spread more openly. Before that, Christians had been persecuted at times.
