Everyday Life and Economy in the Roman Empire – Basic Principles
How it works
In the Roman Empire, everyday life was shaped by a clear social hierarchy, urban and rural life, a variety of occupations, and a division-of-labour economy. Agriculture formed the economic basis, while crafts and trade flourished in cities such as Rome or Pompeii. Slave labour was widespread. Public baths, thermae, markets, and roads shaped the cityscape. The supply of goods took place via a far-reaching network of roads and sea routes. Coin money facilitated trade. The differences between rich and poor were clearly visible.
