Roman Empire and Imperial Era – Basics
How it works
The Roman Empire was one of the most powerful ancient empires and at times extended over large parts of Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia. The imperial era began 27 BC with Augustus, the first emperor, after the end of the Republic. The Roman emperors usually ruled in a centralized manner and had great influence on politics, society, and culture. The empire was divided into provinces, which were administered by governors. The Roman army, the road network, and the administration contributed to stability and expansion. Society was strictly stratified, and Christianity gained importance over the course of the imperial era.
The imperial era of the Roman Empire begins with Augustus and is characterized by centralized rule, provincial administration, social stratification, and cultural developments.
