Greek polis and way of life – basics
How it works
The Greek polis was usually an independent city with surrounding countryside and its own laws. There were many different poleis, for example Athens and Sparta, which differed in form of government and way of life. The polis was a center of life: the agora, temples, theaters, and places of assembly were important sites. The population included citizens, women, children, foreigners, and slaves. Political rights and offices were usually reserved for male citizens. Religion, trade, crafts, and agriculture shaped everyday life.
Note
A polis is a Greek city community with its own surrounding countryside and political independence. How strongly citizens were involved in decisions depended on the respective polis; its own institutions, religious festivals, and economic activities were typical.
