Ancient Greece as an Introduction – Basics

How it works

Ancient Greece was a major high culture of Europe from about 800 BCE to 146 BCE. It consisted of many independent city-states (poleis) such as Athens and Sparta, which had their own laws and forms of rule. The Greeks developed important ideas in politics, science, art, and sport. The Olympic Games, democracy in Athens, and famous thinkers such as Socrates shaped European history. Trade, seafaring, and colonies were important to the Greeks. Greek culture strongly influenced later eras.

Note
Ancient Greece consisted of independent city-states that were connected by language, religion, and culture, but remained politically independent. It was characterized by innovations in politics, science, and art, whose influences are still felt today.
