Writing and early high civilizations – basics and diversity
How it works
Early high civilizations emerged from about 3500 BCE, especially in river valleys such as in Egypt, Mesopotamia, India and China. They were characterized by features such as cities, administration, division of labor, religion and writing. The development of writing made administration, trade and the transmission of knowledge possible. Different writing systems emerged in different regions, such as cuneiform in Mesopotamia and hieroglyphs in Egypt. Writing was often initially a skill of specialists such as scribes.
