Timeline and historical dating
How it works
A timeline is a visual representation of events in the order in which they occurred. Historical dating orders events relative to a reference point, usually the birth of Christ, with the dates before Christ (B.C.) and after Christ (A.D.).
Note
Events before Christ (B.C.) are counted backward, while events after Christ (A.D.) are counted forward. The year 1 B.C. is directly followed by the year 1 A.D.; there is no year 0.

An example
Which event is closer in time to the birth of Christ: 50 B.C. or 100 B.C.?
50 B.C. is closer to the birth of Christ because it is only 50 years before it, while 100 B.C. is 100 years before it.
