Chemical data, sustainability and model limitations – basics

How it works

Chemical data such as density, melting point or solubility describe material properties and help compare substances and evaluate applications. Sustainability in chemistry means conserving resources, avoiding environmental burdens and promoting cycles. Chemical models (e. g. particle model) simplify complex facts, but have limits and can explain real phenomena only partially. The evaluation of chemical processes takes environmental and health aspects into account in addition to efficiency.

Note
Chemical substance data make comparisons and applications possible; sustainable chemistry takes resource conservation and the environment into account; models simplify, but do not explain everything.

An example

Which substances are solid at room temperature (20 °C), if the melting points are as follows: sodium chloride 801 °C, water 0 °C, iron 1538 °C?

Sodium chloride and iron have melting points far above 20 °C and are therefore solid at room temperature. Water has a melting point of 0 °C and is liquid at 20 °C. Therefore, sodium chloride and iron are solid at room temperature.
