Atoms and Molecules – Basic Principles

How it works

Atoms are the smallest building blocks of matter that cannot be chemically broken down any further. They consist of an atomic nucleus with protons and usually neutrons, as well as electrons in the shell. Molecules are particles that consist of at least two atoms that are connected to one another by chemical bonds. Elements consist of only one type of atom, compounds of different types of atoms. The properties of a substance depend on the type and arrangement of its atoms.

Note
Atoms are the basic building blocks of matter; molecules consist of several atoms that are connected to one another by chemical bonds.

An example

What distinguishes a molecule from a single atom?

A molecule consists of at least two atoms that are held together by chemical bonds, whereas a single atom consists of only one atom.
