Oxygen and carbon dioxide – basics and properties
How it works
Oxygen (O₂) is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas that is necessary for the respiration of most living organisms and makes up about 21 % of the air. Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is also a colourless gas that is produced during respiration and combustion and makes up about 0.04 % of the air. Both gases are important for many processes in everyday life and in nature: oxygen is used up during breathing and burning, carbon dioxide is produced in the process. CO₂ can be detected with limewater (it turns cloudy). Oxygen is essential for most living organisms, whereas too much CO₂ is harmful.
Distinguish oxygen and carbon dioxide by their properties, detection methods and their role in nature and everyday life.
