Combustion as a chemical change – basic principles

How it works

During combustion, a substance (fuel) reacts with oxygen from the air. New substances, usually oxides, are formed, and energy is released in the form of heat and often also light. Combustion is a chemical reaction because new substances with new properties are formed. The starting substances cannot simply be recovered afterward. Typical combustion products for many organic substances are carbon dioxide and water. Combustion differs from a physical change because new substances are formed.

Note
Combustion is a chemical reaction in which a substance reacts with oxygen and new substances as well as energy are produced.

An example

What is formed during the combustion of wood mainly besides heat?

Besides heat, the combustion of wood mainly produces carbon dioxide and water. In addition, some ash usually remains.
