Separating and recycling materials – basic principles
How it works
Mixtures consist of different substances that can be separated from one another by physical separation methods such as filtration, sieving, decanting, distillation, or magnetic separation. Recycling means recovering materials from waste and reusing them. Different materials such as paper, glass, metal, and plastic are recycled in different ways. The choice of separation method depends on the properties of the substances involved, e.g. particle size, density, magnetic properties, or solubility.
Note
Mixtures can be broken down into their components by suitable physical separation methods; the method depends on the properties of the substances. Recycling uses these principles to recover valuable materials from waste.

An example
Which separation method is best suited to remove sand from salt water?
Filtration is best suited because sand is insoluble and remains in the filter, while salt water passes through.
